Freiherren Waitz Group
The entrepreneurial history of the Waitz von Eschen family begins in 1744 with Jacob Sigismund Waitz's purchase of the lease of the Sülze Salt Works in Mecklenburg. In 1750 the ruling family of Nassau-Weilburg grants him tenure of the Mehlbach silver mine near Weilmünster, and in 1775 he takes over a number of open-cast lignite mines near Großalmerode, east of Kassel. More mines and various other properties are acquired in the latter part of the 18th century and the early years of the 19th. Other business interests since then have included alum processing, indigo dye works, porcelain manufacture, production of photographic equipment etc.
Mining of lignite finally ceased in 2003.
Ever since those early days, this family-run company - the eighth generation of Waitz von Eschen is now in charge - has always striven to safeguard sustainable economic success by combining broad diversification, continuous growth through reinvestment of its own capital, and a policy of giving "front-line" senior management as much responsibility for decision-making as possible. As a result, the portfolio of company activities has changed in the course of the last 250 years, a process of evolution which will also continue in the future.
