Former open-cast mining in Northern Hessia

Lignite mining was completely stopped in 2003. Until the nineties of the 20th Century it formed the core business of the Group. To costly and time-consuming approval procedures in Germany and the ever shorter maturities supply to power plants prevented a continuation. The high-quality and abundant lignite deposits at various locations in North Hessia are being maintained so that they can be exploited by the next generations if the technology and the economic framework conditions allow for this anytime in the future.

The open-cast mining areas are being re-cultivated and are being integrated for use as nature areas, recreational parks or for building construction. For a majority of the available space, recultivation has already been completed.
